From the 1974 TRIUMF Annual Report:
The payoff for 12-hour days over eight years finally arrived when TRIUMF director, Dr. Reg Richardson, adjusted the various coils to alter the magnetic field and carefully teased the charged particles through. As staff huddled around a small screen in the main control room, a spot of light appeared, proof that a beam of particles had successfully circled the cyclotron – TRIUMF’s steel giant had awoken.

“It would be hard to exaggerate the relief and exhilaration everyone felt at having finally achieved the goal we had worked towards for so many years. The news spread like wildfire and the Control Room was soon inundated with visitors from both inside and outside the lab, many of them bringing refreshments for an impromptu celebration.”
