Official Opening/Commissioning of Cyclotron

On February 9, 1976, then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau officially commissioned TRIUMF’s 520 MeV cyclotron – the heart of Canada’s national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics and accelerator-based science. It was during this ceremony that then Prime Minster famously said: “I don’t really know what a cyclotron is, but I am certainly very happy Canada has one!”
